Your DNA Secrets Revealed

Join us at the Iowa PBS studios for a special DNA workshop entitled “Your DNA Secrets Revealed:  Discovering Your Family History Thru DNA” on Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 1:00-4:30 p.m.

At 1:00 p.m., Kathleen Brandt from a3Geneaology will headline the workshop.  DNA is a versatile tool used to solve our genealogical brickwalls.  As we address common DNA questions, this presentation will equip the researcher with tips, possibilities, and expectations of working with DNA as a genealogical tool.

Kathleen has worked as a researcher and as a consultant for PBS’s fan-favorite series Finding Your Roots.

At 2:30 p.m. Dennis Allen, Kevin Spire and Theresa Liewer from the Iowa Genealogical Society will host two sessions:

Session #1 is entitled “What to Test and Who to Test With”.  In this session you will learn more about the types of DNA tests available, the DNA testing companies on the market, and how to transfer your DNA data from one company to another.

Session #2 is entitled “You’ve Tested, Now What?”.  In this session, you will discover more about ethnicity results, family matches, creating family trees, and DNA website comparisons.
The information contained in this workshop is designed to have something for everyone.

For a $72 donation to PBS, you will receive one admission ticket to this June 3 workshop.  For more information and sign up for this workshop, visit https://www.iowapbs.org/events.

West Wing and Spring Conference

The west wing has gone through a few changes.  New tables and chairs along with new carpeting, sound panels for better sound and matching cabinetry.  A big thanks to all those who have donated time and money.  Also a big thanks to Guide One Insurance and Ideal Floors for their helpful donations.

It was nice to hear the ladies of DAR enjoyed the new west wing.  Letting us know the echo has been reduced tremendously, the visual appeal and comfort level was much better. So with a little more work, we will have an extremely nice room.  And it looks like the Spring Conference was a big hit.  Let's keep the momentum going.

Grant Received

Thank you to the State Historical Society of Iowa for providing Historical Resource Development Program funding to the Iowa genealogical Society.

IGS is using the grand funds to purchase supplies for preserving records pertaining to the Pioneer Certificate program, and for processing and preserving information in our new manuscript collection.

Funding for the Historical Resource Development Program is made possible by an annual appropriation from
the Iowa Legislature to the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program. The Iowa Department of
Cultural Affairs receives 5% of that appropriation.
